If you’ve been thinking about booking your first Brazilian wax but keep talking yourself out of it, I want you to know something: almost every client who sits on my table for the first time tells me afterward that it was easier than they expected. 💜
A little preparation makes a real difference in how comfortable your appointment is and how long your results last. Here’s exactly how to get ready.
Let Your Hair Grow First
This is the one that matters most. Your hair needs to be long enough for the wax to grip — about a quarter of an inch, roughly the length of a grain of rice. For most people that means two to three weeks of growth after shaving.
I know it feels strange to grow it out before an appointment, but hair that’s too short simply won’t come out cleanly, and you’ll leave less smooth than you hoped. If you’re unsure whether you’ve waited long enough, text me before your appointment rather than guessing.
Exfoliate a Few Days Before — Not the Day Of
Gentle exfoliation two or three days beforehand lifts away dead skin and helps free any hairs trapped under the surface. Skip it the day of your appointment, though. Freshly scrubbed skin is more sensitive, and we want your skin calm when we start.
Come Fresh, and Skip the Lotions and Oils
Shower before you come in, and leave the area clean and completely dry. Lotions, oils, and body butters create a barrier that keeps wax from adhering properly. Deodorant is fine everywhere else — just not on the area being waxed.
Think About the Timing in Your Cycle
Skin tends to be more sensitive in the few days right before and during your period. If you have flexibility, booking about a week after your period usually makes for a more comfortable appointment. If the timing doesn’t work out, that’s completely fine — just know you may feel it a little more than usual.
Wear Something Loose and Comfortable
Loose cotton clothing is ideal. Tight jeans or leggings right after a wax trap heat and rub against freshly waxed skin, which is exactly what we’re trying to avoid for the first day or two.
It’s Completely Normal to Be Nervous
Pretty Owl is a women-only studio, and your appointment is private, professional, and unrushed. I’ll explain what I’m doing as we go, and you are always in control of the pace. There is nothing about your body I haven’t seen before, and nothing to feel self-conscious about.
If it helps, tell me it’s your first time when you book. I’ll take a little extra care walking you through it.
Plan to Arrive on Time
A Brazilian is a focused appointment, and I keep my schedule tight so nobody is left waiting. There is a 5-minute grace period for late arrivals, and deposits are non-refundable for cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance or for no-shows. Building in a few extra minutes for Baseline Road traffic is never a bad idea.
Aftercare for the First 48 Hours
Your skin has just had hair removed from the root, so give it a little breathing room:
Skip hot tubs, pools, saunas, and very hot showers. Avoid heavy sweating and intense workouts. Stay out of direct sun on the area, and hold off on exfoliating for two days. Some redness or small bumps in the first few hours are normal and usually settle quickly.
After that first 48 hours, go back to gentle exfoliation two to three times a week and keep the skin moisturized. That routine is what prevents ingrown hairs between appointments.
